Sheepcote Street Bus Lane

Residents will notice some trees starting to emerge from the planters that the West Side BID have deserted and left as unmaintained rubbish bins. The Broad Street end of Sheepcote Street has some tree cover giving a little character, but further down towards StVincent Street, despite some older buildings and shops, the street has a fairly bare aspect. A bit more tree cover along with a gentle reminder on tossing rubbish into the street wont go amiss and more is planned.

Sheepcote Street Bus-lane
Sheepcote Street was specifically mentioned in the early environmental surveys prior to the start on work for the Metro. It acknowledged that there was a risk of the street suffering increased traffic flows due to closing Broad Street for through traffic. BCC was tasked with ensuring this did not happen.
Of course nothing was done. The street became a popular rat run with head to tail traffic in both directions at several periods during the day. Heavy traffic and altered bus lanes along the street was a particular issue for residents as the zebra crossing at that time was a on a raised bit of road and speeding busses and lorries hit the crossing with some force creating not only noise, but vibration which threatened the buildings on either side of the crossing.
Threats by residents of bringing the whole issue to the Local Authority Ombudsman eventually resulted in removal of the bump and installation of a bus gate, effectively creating a one-way system. The street is now very quiet with little traffic even at rush hours
